“We owe it to ourselves and to the next generation to conserve the environment so that we can bequeath our children a sustainable world that benefits all,”
These are the immortal words of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai; words that perfectly resonate with Mr George Wachiuri, CEO of Optiven Group.
This leading real estate guru believes that everyone has a responsibility to keep the environment clean and conducive. “I am driven by a deep desire to conserve the environment. Sustainable management of our natural resources is extremely important for us and for the sake of our future generations,” says Mr Wachiuri. To him, it all starts with an individual. Every individual has a sacred duty to make sure that they do not harm the environment.
In order to walk his talk on environmental matters, Mr Wachiuri is the chairman of a Foundation – Optiven Foundation – whose one of its pillars is environmental protection. This Foundation takes environmental protection with the seriousness that it deserves. It spearheads a number of environmental friendly activities and campaigns that are aimed at making Kenya an environmental conscious country.
Given, the Foundation’s mother company – Optiven Limited – offers Value Added Plots, as its key product. These value additions transform ordinary land to environmentally suitable land that is ready for immediate settlement. The company is at the forefront in ensuring that its clients not only get value for their money, but that they also get the best environmentally friendly home set-ups ever. Optiven’s gated-community plots are characterized by trees that are systematically planted along the internal roads. They also come with green recreational and medication parks that have many well taken care of trees. The firm does not interfere with seasonal rivers on site. One of Optiven’s flagship projects is already fitted with solar-powered street lights, as a way of going natural.
The company also encourages propel environmental management through tree planting in all its projects to prevent soil erosion. It also embraces water conservation and construction of drifts. Optiven staffs are also offered training on importance of value additions, prevention of soil erosion and water conservation.
At Optiven Limited, there is an unwritten policy that says, ‘No printing of unnecessary papers.’ And in order to make this work, the company has fully embraced digital communication, where almost all internal memos are done digitally.
Mr Wachiuri also believes in being at the fore-front in regards to advocacy on importance of protecting the environment wherever he gets a chance to do so.
And here might be the official secret to this gentleman’s deep love for the environment: The distance between Labura (where Mr Wachiuri was born) and Ihithe (where World’s top Environmentalist Prof. Wangari Maathai was born) is only 22 miles. That probably explains why this leading real estate guru’s thoughts aren’t far off the Nobel Laureate’s.
