All over the world, it is thinking day today. But just how many of us think? And what does it mean to think? In my years of mentorship, I have found that majority of the mistakes be they in life or in business, have been as a result of not thinking.
The way children behave comes to mind and some cases are actually an eye opener as to how we have become beings that do not want to think but benefit from the brains and thoughts of others. Think just for a while about the innovations that have changed history! How is it that one person can provide such a life changing thought yet another will literally be dependent on it without having thought of it?
Such thoughts make me want to know what is it that made the men of yore like Aristotle, Da Vinci or Leonardo the Great as he was known or even Archimedes, the very name that echoes physics lectures and secondary school physics teachers as the morning sun.
These are just a few of the thinkers of our time. And who said that there were no women in the great thinkers in history? I think of the impact of Marie Skłodowska -Curie and it is because of minds like hers that I always say, it is achieveable it is doable only if we think. Marie Skłodowska-Curie was a Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity.
She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person and only woman to win twice, the only person to win twice in multiple sciences, and was part of the Curie family legacy of five Nobel Prizes. She was also the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris, and in 1995 became the first woman to be entombed on her own merits in the Panthéon in Paris. And all this because she put her thinking into practice
Marie then becomes a great inspiration as the world observes thinking day today under the theme, the day is a celebration of girls serving humanity under the girl guide movement. The challenge is for the girls to take the lead in matters leadership and especially in innovation seeing that the theme for this year’s observation of thinking day is Leadership.
The same will affect the generations to come either positively or negatively because the nature of humanity is to copy from previous generations. If our women and girls fail to lead in the space of thinkers then it becomes significantly tricky for the children to believe that women can also think. Over the years we have seen a great improvement in the number of girls doing well in sciences which is mainly a matter of thinking. But more needs to be done to boost the thinkers leading to the workplace.
As part of our celebrations on World Thinking Day we review what we have done to the great minds of girls (and boys) that have managed to whether difficulties to succed. This is through working with partners in providing education opportunities for needy
students and providing them with opportunities to learn through our Soaring Eagles Sponsorship Programme under the Optiven Foundation. That is why the World Thinking Day is important for us and more so the theme for 2019 which is leadership, challenges us to think out of the box in making a difference.
As regards innovation, at Optiven Limited we took the challenge to place innovation as our focus area for the current financial year. This we believe will not only propel the company to understand our markets better while enlarging our capacity to deliver customer needs, it will also improve our output and boost staff morale.
In an all inclusive formula, we endeavoured to engage our staff to providing their innovative thoughts towards making the organization better. We are glad that all our staff had engaging and resourceful ideas – with the ingenious minds within the team being rewarded in a special way.
To all those thinkers remember it is about being intentional in thinking about that which no one else has after all the future belongs to the thinkers. To all girl guides around the world, here’s wishing you all, an innovative thinking day for the year 2019.
