Optiven Group CEO George Wachiuri, has lauded the government’s efforts towards improving the standards of living of Kenyans with focus on affordable housing. Wachiuri says that the development is a timely move which will also see the realization of UN SDG Goal number 11 on sustainable cities.
He however called for better planning of communities including those under the affordable housing programme. Meanwhile, the government is set to fast track it’s intention to build 200,000 – 250,000 houses every year. President Dr. William Ruto says that the plan is to benefit millions of Kenyans who live in informal settlements.
Ruto made the remarks when he launched the construction of 5,300 houses under the affordable housing initiative. So far, the President has already commissioned more than 17, 850 units in Mukuru, Rongai, Kibera and Mavoko respectively. The government also announced that while 1.5 million people are currently paying mortgage towards home ownership, ordinary wananchi have no affordable houses to buy.
